Telemedicine
The advent of new technology and the widespread availability of broadband internet enables SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital to partner with numerous hospitals throughout the bi-state area to provide expert pediatric services through telemedicine. Telemedicine is the process of using electronic communication with video and audio-capable devices to provide accurate, real-time evaluation and consultation to patients at various locations throughout the region.
Partnering hospitals have the ability to collaborate with SSM Health Cardinal Glennon physicians any time, day or night. For other physicians and hospitals, this offers a unique forum to discuss cases, prevent unnecessary transfers, or in some cases, receive immediate evaluation and consultation from one of our pediatric specialists.
TeleED and TeleNICU
These consultative services bring the expertise of our SSM Health Cardinal Glennon physicians directly to partnering hospitals. Through telemedicine technology, our physicians can access x-rays, labs and vital signs, as well as perform a visual exam of the patient in order to provide a second opinion in cases of trauma.
For newborn babies in need of a specialist’s evaluation, telemedicine enables SSM Health Cardinal Glennon neonatologists to evaluate babies at their birth hospital, keeping families together and often avoiding unnecessary transport to another hospital.
Specialist Care
In some of our partner communities, especially rural areas, telemedicine is bringing pediatric specialists to hospitals who have not benefited from these services in the past. Pediatric pulmonology, gastroenterology, dermatology and cardiology are planned services to be offered via telemedicine in the future. This innovative service enables families to receive expert care for their children close to home.
